Listen to the article:
Amazon has just released Nova Act, a cutting-edge AI model designed to perform autonomous tasks within web browsers. Announced today, Nova Act is Amazon’s answer to the growing demand for AI agents that go beyond simple chatbots to complete real-world tasks, such as online shopping, filling out forms, and making reservations—all without human intervention.
What Is Nova Act?
Nova Act is part of Amazon’s broader Nova AI initiative, which includes multiple foundation models for generating text, images, and videos. Unlike traditional AI chatbots, Nova Act can directly interact with web interfaces, handling elements like drop-down menus, date pickers, and pop-up dialogs—challenges that typically stump other AI models.
The AI is designed for developers looking to build autonomous web agents that execute step-by-step tasks, such as submitting time-off requests or managing recurring online orders. The model works independently of APIs, making it more adaptable to a wide range of web environments.
Developer Toolkit & Research Preview
To support innovation, Amazon has launched a research preview of the Amazon Nova Act SDK, allowing developers to experiment with the model before full-scale deployment. The SDK, available as a Python software package, lets developers create AI agents capable of following natural-language instructions to navigate web pages and complete tasks.
One of the standout features of Nova Act is its ability to operate in “background mode”, meaning it can perform tasks without displaying anything on-screen—ideal for large-scale automation in business settings. Additionally, multiple AI agents can run simultaneously, enabling efficient workload management.
AI Agent Race
Amazon’s move comes amid fierce competition in the AI automation space. Companies like OpenAI (with Operator), Google, Microsoft, and Salesforce are all racing to develop AI agents that can seamlessly interact with web environments. However, Amazon’s deep integration with its own services, including AWS Bedrock—Amazon’s platform for integrating AI models (including third-party models) into various applications—gives it a unique advantage. This flexibility allows Amazon’s AI models to be more adaptable across different use cases. The company has also invested heavily in external AI, committing up to $8 billion to Anthropic, the startup behind the Claude chatbot.
Nova AI Ecosystem
Nova Act isn’t just a standalone project—it’s part of a larger ecosystem of AI tools under Amazon’s Nova AI initiative, which includes:
✅ Nova Micro, Lite, and Pro – Text generation models tailored for
different tasks.
✅ Nova Canvas – A model for generating images from text and image
input.
✅ Nova Reel – A tool for video generation.
Amazon is also rolling out nova.amazon.com, a new platform where developers and users can explore the Nova foundation models and test their capabilities.
The Road Ahead
While Nova Act is still in its early research phase, Amazon is closely monitoring its performance and gathering feedback from developers. The company aims to refine the technology and expand its capabilities, further closing the gap between AI automation and real-world applications.
