1️⃣ Google’s Gemini 2.5 Pro (Experimental) is now free for all users via gemini.google.com, with mobile app support coming soon.

2️⃣ It features a 1M token context window, surpassing OpenAI’s and Anthropic’s latest models in reasoning, coding, and math performance.

4️⃣ Google’s long-term plans are unclear, but for now, users can explore its capabilities at no cost.

Listen to the article:

In a latest post on X, Google announced that its most advanced AI model, Gemini 2.5 Pro (Experimental), is now available to all users for free. Google also revealed that, starting today, Gemini Advanced users can create with Canvas on Gemini 2.5 Pro. This marks a major shift from its previous approach, where only paid Gemini Advanced subscribers had access. So, what does this mean for everyday users, and how does it compare to its competitors?

Gemini 2.5 Pro: Google’s Most Powerful AI Model Yet

Announced just days ago, Gemini 2.5 Pro is Google’s smartest AI model to date. Unlike its predecessors, it integrates advanced reasoning capabilities rather than separating them into different versions. Google has been focusing on improving coding performance, and this update reflects a major step in that direction.

The model boasts a massive 1 million token context window, allowing it to process large amounts of text in one go. To put that into perspective, that’s roughly 750,000 words at a time—far surpassing OpenAI’s o3 Mini (200,000 tokens) and even Claude’s latest 3.7 Sonnet model (500,000 tokens).

How to Access Gemini 2.5 Pro for Free

Previously, Gemini 2.5 Pro was limited to users subscribed to Google One AI Premium for $19.99 per month and Gemini Advanced users on the Gemini app. But as of today, Google has rolled it out to all free users via gemini.google.com. Support for Android and iOS apps is also on the way.

To access it, simply go to the Gemini website and select Gemini 2.5 Pro (Experimental) from the dropdown menu. While it’s still in an early testing phase, Google’s goal is to put its “most intelligent model into more people’s hands as soon as possible.”

How Does It Stack Up Against the Competition?

Google is aiming to compete directly with AI giants like OpenAI and Anthropic. While OpenAI’s ChatGPT Plus has been stealing the spotlight with its native image generation, Google is betting big on reasoning and coding capabilities.

Here’s a quick comparison:

AI ModelContext WindowStrengths
Gemini 2.5 Pro1 million tokensReasoning, coding, math, science
OpenAI’s o3 Mini200,000 tokensImage generation, general AI
Claude 3.7 Sonnet500,000 tokensLanguage comprehension

Google’s latest model leads in math, science, and coding benchmarks, topping the LMArena leaderboard and performing well in Humanity’s Last Exam, a benchmark for AI reasoning.

What’s Next for Gemini 2.5 Pro?

Right now, Gemini 2.5 Pro is still labeled “experimental,” so there’s no guarantee that Google will keep it free forever. Some features, like the 1 million token memory window and higher usage limits, are still reserved for paid Gemini Advanced users.

However, Google has been steadily making more features free over the past few months—like Deep Research, document uploads, and image generation—so there’s a good chance this trend will continue.

Final Thoughts

Google’s decision to make Gemini 2.5 Pro free is a game-changer. With its superior reasoning abilities and enormous context window, it’s a strong competitor to OpenAI’s and Anthropic’s latest models. Whether it remains free in the long run is uncertain, but for now, users can experiment and explore what Gemini’s latest model can do.
