The first attempt to launch an orbital rocket from continental Europe ended in failure just seconds after liftoff. The Spectrum rocket, developed by German startup Isar Aerospace, crashed into the sea after a short flight from Norway’s Andoya Spaceport on Sunday. Despite the setback, the company and Europe’s space industry remain optimistic, calling the test a crucial step in Europe’s journey toward independent space access.

A Rocky Start for Spectrum

Spectrum, a 28-meter (92-foot) tall, two-stage uncrewed rocket, lifted off at 12:30 p.m. local time, marking a historic moment for European spaceflight. However, just 30 seconds into its flight, the rocket began smoking and lost control, ultimately crashing and exploding into the sea. Fortunately, no injuries or damage to the launch pad or personnel were reported.

Isar Aerospace had set realistic expectations before the test, stating that reaching orbit on the first attempt was unlikely. The Goal, instead, was to gather crucial flight data and validate systems.

Learning from Failure

Despite the failed launch, Isar Aerospace CEO Daniel Metzler described it as a “great success,” emphasizing that the company gained significant insights from the test. “We had a clean liftoff, 30 seconds of flight, and even got to validate our Flight Termination System,” Metzler said in a post-launch press conference.

The European Space Agency’s (ESA) director general, Josef Aschbacher, echoed this sentiment, stating on X (formerly Twitter), “Success to get off the pad, and lots of data already obtained. Rocket launch is hard. Never give up, move forward with even more energy!”

The Race for European Space Autonomy

Sunday’s launch was Europe’s first privately funded attempt at an orbital launch from the continent. The failure highlights the challenges of spaceflight but also the determination of European startups to break into the competitive commercial launch market, currently dominated by SpaceX, Blue Origin, and Chinese firms.

For decades, European space efforts relied heavily on Russian launch stations, a dependency that has become untenable since diplomatic ties with Moscow soured in 2022. Additionally, delays with the Ariane 6 rocket and issues with the Vega-C satellite launcher have further complicated Europe’s space ambitions.

What’s Next for Isar Aerospace?

Despite the crash, Isar Aerospace remains committed to perfecting Spectrum. Two more rockets are already in development, and the company has signed contracts to launch maritime surveillance satellites by 2028.

With other European startups like HyImpulse, Rocket Factory Augsburg (RFA), and PLD Space racing to establish themselves, Spectrum’s test flight is just one step in Europe’s growing space industry. While the first attempt didn’t go as planned, the data gathered will pave the way for future successful launches—and a stronger European presence in space.

Final Thoughts

Failures are an inevitable part of rocket development, but each misstep brings valuable lessons. The Spectrum test flight may not have reached orbit, but it demonstrated that Europe is serious about advancing its space capabilities.
