Netflix has recently rolled out HDR10+ streaming, a major upgrade for viewers with compatible devices. If you’re watching Netflix on an AV1-enabled device, you’re in for a treat with enhanced picture quality and more immersive visuals. Previously, devices supporting HDR10 only received static metadata, but with the introduction of HDR10+, Netflix brings dynamic metadata into the mix, making your viewing experience more accurate and lifelike.
But what exactly does HDR10+ bring to the table? To put it simply, it improves how colors and brightness are displayed on screen, offering deeper contrast, richer colors, and more details, particularly in scenes with varying lighting. With HDR10+, dynamic metadata allows each frame to be adjusted individually, meaning scenes with bright highlights or deep shadows will look more natural. For example, a flashlight’s glow might have been too bright or lost in previous HDR formats, but with HDR10+, you’ll see every fine detail and subtle shift in lighting.

This is a step forward for Netflix, which has been pioneering High Dynamic Range (HDR) technology for nearly a decade. Starting with Marco Polo, Netflix began offering HDR content, and today, over 11,000 hours of HDR titles are available. As HDR technology grew, so did the number of devices that supported it. The result? More than 300% growth in HDR streaming, with even more devices now supporting HDR configurations.
By adding HDR10+, Netflix ensures that more users with HDR-capable devices can enjoy the best possible picture quality. This move is part of Netflix’s ongoing efforts to expand its HDR ecosystem, which already includes Dolby Vision and HDR10. The addition of HDR10+ with AV1 streaming not only improves visuals but also enhances streaming efficiency. AV1 is one of the most advanced video codecs, providing better video quality at lower bitrates, ensuring smooth playback even in high-definition content.
To access HDR10+ streams, you’ll need a Netflix Premium plan, an HDR10+-compatible device, and a device that supports AV1 encoding. Netflix is continuously rolling out more HDR10+ content, aiming to offer this experience across all its HDR titles by the end of the year.
Netflix’s HDR10+ upgrade is all about enhancing picture quality and ensuring that its members experience content exactly as the creators intended. It’s another step forward in Netflix’s commitment to providing an immersive and top-tier viewing experience for everyone.
For TV or streaming devices, ensure that the HDR toggle is enabled.
