NVIDIA just dropped the Isaac GR00T N1, calling it the world’s first open and fully customizable foundation model designed for humanoid robots. Yep, we’re officially stepping into the age of generalist robots, and this could change how industries tackle the global labor shortage — which, by the way, is over 50 million workers short worldwide.
So, what’s GR00T N1 all about? Think of it like the brain behind future humanoid robots. Although GR00T N1 isn’t a physical robot itself, it’s an advanced AI model that powers robots, enabling them to think, reason, and perform human-like tasks. It’s built with a dual-system inspired by how humans think — System 1 handles fast, instinctive reactions, while System 2 takes care of slow, thoughtful decisions. System 2 plans the moves, System 1 executes them smoothly — almost like how we reach for our coffee while reading the news.
What really powers this is NVIDIA’s vision-language model and tons of training data — both real and synthetic — generated using their Omniverse platform. Thanks to this, GR00T N1 can pull off general tasks like grabbing things, moving objects, and even doing multi-step jobs that require memory and logic.
Jensen Huang, NVIDIA’s CEO, put it best: “The age of generalist robotics is here.” And he’s not kidding — during the demo, a humanoid robot from 1X Technologies cleaned up around the house using skills learned from GR00T N1.
The coolest part? Developers can fine-tune GR00T N1 with their own data — real or synthetic — making it super adaptable for different robots or tasks. Companies like Boston Dynamics, Agility Robotics, and NEURA Robotics are already jumping on board.
But NVIDIA’s not stopping there. They’re teaming up with Google DeepMind and Disney Research to build Newton, a new open-source physics engine designed for robot learning.
