AI is doing some truly remarkable things in the world of ancient history. Thanks to advancements in machine learning and neural networks, it’s helping researchers crack codes, translate long-lost languages, and restore damaged texts—tasks that experts have struggled with for centuries.

Take Pythia, for instance. Developed by Google DeepMind and the University of Oxford, this AI tool helps restore missing parts of ancient Greek inscriptions. By using deep neural networks, Pythia can predict and fill in gaps where the text is damaged. What’s incredible is that it actually outperforms human epigraphists, the experts who study inscriptions. In fact, Pythia’s predictions are more accurate, with a character error rate of just 30.1%, compared to 57.3% when humans analyzed the same texts. This tool doesn’t just preserve the writings; it helps us dive deeper into the history behind them, offering insights into the past in ways we never thought possible.

AI is also playing a key role in deciphering languages that have stumped experts for ages. One example is the work done on Oracle Bone Script, one of China’s earliest writing systems.
