DeepResearch: OpenAI Introduced New AI Agent

OpenAI has just introduced DeepResearch, its new AI agent designed to autonomously conduct complex, multi-step research tasks on the internet. Built into ChatGPT, it operates using OpenAI’s upcoming o3 model, which is optimized for reasoning, web browsing, and data analysis.

DeepResearch is built through end-to-end reinforcement learning, meaning it learns from the consequences of its actions, starting from the very beginning without requiring human intervention or intermediate steps. It learns by trial and errorโ€”performing an action, receiving feedback, and adjusting its behavior based on rewards or punishments to maximize positive outcomes.

Unlike traditional AI chat models that generate responses based on pre-trained data, DeepResearch takes things to a whole new level. It acts like an intelligent research assistant, actively searching the internet for relevant and up-to-date information, analyzing multiple sources, picking out important details, compiling detailed reports with proper citations, creating graphs, reviewing user-uploaded files, and including relevant images for clarity. These capabilities enable users to access well-organized information without manually sifting through numerous sources.

It is not currently available to ChatGPT Free Plan users. OpenAI has made it available only to Pro users at a subscription cost of $200 per month, which includes up to 100 queries. Whether this hefty price is worth it remains to be seen. Plans are also in place to extend access to users subscribed to the ChatGPT Plus, Team, and Enterprise tiers, although specific details on pricing and availability for those plans are yet to be announced.

Despite its advanced features, DeepResearch should not be seen as a full replacement for traditional research methods. Like any AI model, itโ€™s still important to double-check the information and verify sources for accuracy. While it can generate organized reports, critical thinking and independent analysis remain essential in the research process. As OpenAI continues to improve its models, DeepResearch is poised to become one of the most powerful AI tools for research. However, its high subscription cost may limit accessibility, making it primarily suitable for professionals and organizations that require frequent, in-depth research assistance. Itโ€™s still unclear whether it will eventually be available at a lower price or as a standalone service, but its launch represents a significant step forward in the development of AI-driven research capabilities.
